Bird Squidgems
These cute little birds are part of my squidgems collection. This collection features Flamingo, Parrot, Peacock and Toucan.
Yarn
DK, light weight, #3 yarn in pink, grey and white for flamingo, red, yellow, blue and grey for parrot, blue, green and yellow for peacock and black, grey and white for toucan plus small amounts of colours for the beak.
Sport weight, 4 ply, # 2 yarn or Embroidery thread for the eyes in white, blue and black.
Hook & Other Materials
US Size C (2.5mm) crochet hook I use this set from Amazon*

Written in English US terms with abbreviations for UK terms
sc=single crochet (double crochet in UK)
hdc=half double crochet (half treble crochet UK)
dc=double crochet (treble crochet UK)
ch=chain
slst=slip stitch
mc=magic circle
inc=increase
dec=decrease
Loop stitch= Wrap the yarn from front to back over the index finger of your yarn hand.
The length of the loop depends on how loose or tight you wrap the yarn in this step.
With the yarn loop still on your index finger, yarn over (yo) the hook and draw the yarn through the 2 loops on your hook.

Head / Body for all
Using red for the parrot, blue for the peacock, pink for the flamingo and black for the toucan.
Round1 : 6 sc in mc. (6)
Round 2: *inc* x 6. (12)
Round 3: *sc 1, inc* x 6. (18)
Round 4: *sc 2, inc* x 6. (24)
Round 5: *sc 3, inc* x 6. (30)
Round 6: *sc 4, inc* x 6. (36)
Round 7: *sc 5, inc* x 6. (42)
Rounds 8-20: sc all. (42) Place a marker at round 7 for the eyes.
Round 21: *sc 5, dec* x 6. (36)
Start stuffing and continue throughout.
Round 22: *sc 4, dec* x 6. (30)
Round 23: *sc 3, dec* x 6. (24)
Round 24: *sc 2, dec* x 6. (18)
Round 25: *sc 1, dec* x 6. (12)
Round 26: *dec* x 6. (6)
Fasten off and sew closed.
Eyes for all
Using embroidery thread or 4ply yarn. Start with black
Round 1: 6 sc in a mc, slst to first.
Round 2: ch1, 2 sc in the same, 2 sc in each of the next 2, join blue and 2 sc in each of the next 3, slst to first. (12)
(For the toucans eyes sc all around in white)
Round 3: join white at the other side at the beginning of blue, ch1, sc across the blue part and slst into the first black, fasten off leaving a long black and white strand for sewing eyes to the head.
Sew two white lines at the top left side of each eye, sew in ends leaving a long white and a long black one for sewing later.
Head feathers for Parrot, Flamingo and Toucan
Ch6, slst to first to form a circle, loop stitch in each chain and fasten off leaving a long end for sewing.
Legs for parrot, peacock and toucan
Use grey for parrot, yellow for peacock and blue for toucan
Round 1: 6 sc in mc. (6)
Round 2: (in blo) sc 6. (6)
Round 3: Sc 6. (6)
Fasten off.
Join yarn in the flo from round 2, *ch3, slst into second chain, slst into next then slst to the next loop on foot* repeat twice more.
Parrot
Wings
Starting with red
Round 1: 6 sc in mc. (6) Turn
Round 2: ch1,*inc* x 6. (12) Turn
Round 3: ch1, sc 2, inc, *sc 2, inc* x 2, sc 3 (15) Turn
Change to yellow
Round 4: Ch1, sc 7. (7) Turn
Round 5: (in flo) ch1, sc 7. (7) Turn
Round 6: (in blo) ch1, dec, sc 3, dec. (5) Turn
Change to blue
Round 7: (in flo) ch1, sc all. (5) Turn
Round 8: (in blo) ch1, dec, sc1, dec. (3) Turn
Round 9: (in flo) ch1, sc all. (3) Turn
Round 10: ch3, sc in second ch from hook, sc next and slst to next.
Fasten off.
With blue nearest, join yellow yarn to the second loop from round 4
*Ch3, sc in second ch from hook, sc next and slst to next loop* repeat x 3.
Then repeat for the next row with yellow.
Join blue and do the same.
Tail
Starting with red
Round 1: ch10, sc in second ch from hook, sc next 8. (9) Turn
Round 2: (in flo) ch1, sc in same, sc 8. (9) Turn
Round 3: (in blo) ch1, sc in same, sc 8. (9) Turn
Change to yellow
Round 4: (in flo) ch1, sc in same, sc 8.(9) Turn
Round 5: (in blo) ch1, dec, sc 5, dec. (7) Turn
Round 6: (in flo) ch1, sc in same, sc 6. (7) Turn
Change to blue
Round 7: (in blo) ch1, sc in same, sc 6. (7) Turn

Fasten off.
Pin the eyes so the top is level with round 7 and sew in place. Sew the beak just underneath.
Sew 3 stitches of pink for the cheeks, sew eyebrows with black embroidery thread.
Pin the wings, tail and feet in place and sew when happy with the position. Sew the head feathers in the centre of the head.

Change to green
Round 3: *sc 1, inc* x 3, hdc 1, inc* x 3. (18)
Round 4: *ch1, sc* repeat to end. (18)
Fasten off.
Head feathers

Fasten off.
Sew four of the tail feathers as shown above, then sew onto the back where my pins are placed.
Pin the eyes so the top is level with round 7 and sew in place.
Sew 3 stitches of pink for the cheeks. Sew the beak under the eyes. Sew the wings at each side a bit higher than the tail, Sew the feet and head feathers.

Starting with pink
Round 1: Ch12, slst to first to form a circle, ch1, sc in the same and next 11. (12)
Round 2: *Sc 1, inc* x 6. (18)
Rounds 3-4: Sc all. (18)
Round 5: *sc 2, inc* x 6. (24)
Change to white
Fold in half and sc through both sides to close up. Turn
*Ch3, sc in second chain from hook, sc in next slst back to edge of wing* repeat to end.
Fasten off.
Tail
Starting with pink
Round 1: Ch12, slst to first to form a circle, ch1, sc in same and next 11. (12)
Round 2: *Sc 1, inc* x 6. (18)
Rounds 3-4: Sc all. (18)

Change to white
Fold in half and sc through both sides to close up. Turn

Starting with grey

Change to pink
Rounds 3-12: Sc 6. (6)
Fasten off.
Join grey yarn in the flo from round 2, *ch3, slst into second chain, slst into next then slst to the next loop on foot* repeat twice more.
Pin the eyes so the top is level with round 7 and sew in place.
Sew 3 stitches of pink for the cheeks. Sew the beak, legs, wings and tail, sew the head feathers and sew some eyelashes with black embroidery thread.
Toucan
Wings
Starting with black
Round 1: Ch12, slst to first to form a circle, ch1, sc in same and next 11. (12)
Rounds 2-4: sc all. (12)
Fasten off.
Join grey
Fold in half and sc through both sides to close up. Turn
*Ch3, sc in second chain from hook, sc in next slst back to edge of wing* repeat to end.
Fasten off.
Beak

Sew eyes so the top is level with round 7 and sew in place.
Sew 3 stitches of pink for the cheeks. Sew the beak, wings, tail, feet and head feathers in place.
