Spooky Mods
Here are some Mods to make different designs for the pick and mix range, so that you can get lots of different looks with one pattern. Or they can be used for many other projects, even just making the circle part for an applique!

Materials
Dk / weight 3 yarn in various different colours and a main colour for each square.
4mm crochet hook
Needle

Written in English US terms with abbreviations for UK
sc = single crochet (double crochet UK)
hdc = half double crochet (half treble UK)
dc = double crochet (treble crochet UK)
tr = treble crochet (double treble UK)

Pumpkin
Make the circle part of the square in orange
Eyes / Stalk
Using a 4mm hook and black yarn make two for each square / using green make one for each square for the stalk.
Small 4” and Medium 5” square
Row 1: ch3, sc in second chain from hook, [2 sc] in the last. (3)
Fasten off with a long end for sewing.
Large 6.5” square
Row 1: ch5, hdc in third chain from hook, hdc 1, [2 dc] in the last. (4)
Fasten off with a long end for sewing.
Extra large 8.5” square
Row 1: ch6, hdc in third chain from hook, hdc 1, dc 1, [2 tr] in the last. (5)
Fasten off with a long end for sewing.
Sew the eyes and stalk then sew a small triangle nose and a mouth with black yarn.
I also used yellow embroidery thread to outline the eyes.

Round 1: in a magic circle make 9 hdc, pull tight, slst to first.
Fasten off with a long end for sewing.
Sew the wings at each side of the circle, sew the ears at the top, sew a v in the ears then a line in the middle with white or pink.
Sew two white lines on the eyes before sewing on.
Sew a mouth with two white triangles for teeth.
Ghost
Make the circle part of the square in white

I used a 3mm hook and pink embroidery thread or you could sew them.

In a magic circle sc 6, slst to first and pull tight. (6)
Fasten off with a long end for sewing.
Using black yarn sew two upside down v for the eyes and mouth, sew the arms at either side, sew the bottom along the bottom.
Zombie
Make the circle part of the square in beige
Small 4” / Medium 5” square
Eye
Make one using black yarn
In a magic circle sc 6, pull tight and slst to first. (6)
Fasten off with a long end for sewing.
Large square 6.5”
Eye
Make one using black yarn
In a magic circle sc 8, pull tight and slst to first. (8)
Fasten off with a long end for sewing.
Extra large 8.5” square

In a magic circle hdc 9, pull tight and slst to first. (9)
Fasten off with a long end for sewing.
Hair
Cut 4, 4 inch strands of yarn. Fold the strands of yarn in half and pull the center part way through the first row of head, so it's about an inch through forming a loop, then pull the tail ends of yarn through the loop and tighten, snip ends to around 2cm.
Sew the eye, sew a cross for the other eye and mouth with black yarn.
Skeleton
Make the circle part of the square in white
Small 4” / Medium 5” square
Eyes
Using black and a 4mm hook and black yarn make two for each square
In a magic circle make sc 2, hdc 1, dc 2, hdc 1, sc 2, pull closed, slst to first. (8)
Fasten off with a long end for sewing.
Large 6.5” square
Eyes
Using black and a 4mm hook and black yarn make two for each square
In a magic circle make sc 3, hdc 1, dc 4, hdc 1, sc 3, pull closed, slst to first. (12)
Fasten off with a long end for sewing.
Extra large 8.5” square
Eyes
Using black and a 4mm hook and black yarn make two for each square
In a magic circle make sc 3, hdc 2, dc 6, hdc 2, sc 3, pull closed, slst to first. (16)
Fasten off with a long end for sewing.
Sew the eyes at each side of the top of the head, then sew two nostrils and a mouth with black yarn.
Cat
Make the circle part of the square black
Small 4” / Medium 5” square
Muzzle
Using white
In a magic circle make 12 dc, pull tight, slst to the first. (12)
Fasten off with a long end for sewing.
Eyes
Make two starting with black
Round 1: in a magic circle make 6 sc, slst to the first. (6)
Change to green
Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch. (12)

Change to green

Ears
Make two using black
Row 1: ch7, hdc in third chain from hook, dc 3, [2 tr] in the last. (6)

Using white
In a magic circle make 16 dc, pull tight, slst to the first. (16)
Fasten off with a long end for sewing.
Eyes
Make two starting with black
Round 1: in a magic circle make 8 hdc, slst to first. (8)
Change to green
Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch. (16)
Fasten off with a long end for sewing.
Ears
Make two using black
Row 1: ch7, hdc in third chain from hook, [2 dc] in the next, dc 2, 2 tr in the last. Fasten off with a long end for sewing.
Sew two white lines on the eyes before sewing in place.
Sew a nose with pink and mouth with black on the muzzle before sewing on. Sew the ears in the top corner of each side, sew whiskers with white cotton.
Frankenstein
Make the circle part of the square green
Small 4” / Medium 5” square
Frankenstein is made different to the other squares to get the shape of his head better, the changes are as follows:
Make the circle with Frankenstein colour but on the last round of the circle do the first 11 hdc stitches with black, then complete the rest of the round with frankenstein colour, this will make the hair. Then do the next round as follows:
Starting with black
ch1, hdc in the same, [2 dc] in the next stitch, ch 1, [2 dc] in the next stitch, hdc 1, sc 5 (7 for large square), hdc 1, [2 dc] in the next, ch1, [2 dc] in the next, hdc 1, (change to main colour of the square) sc 5 (7 for large square), *hdc 1, [2 dc] in the next, ch1, [2 dc] in the next, hdc 1, sc 5 (7 for large square)* repeat once more, slst to the first stitch, then slst to the ch1 corner space to start the next round. Continue the rest of the square with main colour.
Eyes
Make two using black
In a magic circle make 6 sc, pull tight and slst to the first. (6)
Fasten off with a long end for sewing.
Ears
Make two
In a magic circle make 1 sc, 3 hdc, 1 sc, pull tight. (5)
Fasten off with a long end for sewing.
Bolts
Make two using grey
ch3, sc in the second chain from hook, sc 1. (2)
Fasten off with a long end for sewing.
Large 6.5” Square
Make the circle with Frankenstein colour but on the last round of the circle do the first 15 hdc with black, then complete the rest of the round with frankenstein colour, this will make the hair. Then do the next round as follows:
Starting with black
ch1, hdc in the same, hdc 1, [2 dc, 1 tr] in the next stitch, ch 1, [2 dc, 1 tr] in the next stitch, hdc 2, sc 8, hdc 2, [2 dc, 1 tr] in the next, ch1, [2 dc, 1 tr] in the next, hdc 2, (change to main colour of the square) sc 8, *hdc 2, [2 dc, 1 tr] in the next, ch1, [2 dc, 1 tr] in the next, hdc 2, sc 8* repeat once more, slst to the first stitch, then slst to the ch1 corner space to start the next round. Continue the rest of the square with main colour.

In a magic circle make 1 sc, 4 dc, 1 sc into a magic circle, pull tight. (6)
Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.
Sew two white lines on each eye before sewing in place, using black yarn sew an eye brow on the forehead and a mouth. Sew the ears at each side of the head just below the hair. Sew the bolts at the bottom of each side of the head.
Spider
Make the circle part of the square in black

Using white and 4mm hook make two
8 hdc into a magic circle, pull tight. (8)
Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

I used black yarn to sew the legs.

Using black
Round 1: make a magic circle then ch2 and 12 dc, slst to the first stitch and pull tight. (12)
Change to green
Round 2: [ch2, 2 hdc] in the same stitch, [2 hdc] in each stitch to end, slst to the first stitch. (24)
Change to white
Round 3: ch2, 1 dc in the same stitch, [2 dc] in the next, *dc 1, [2 dc] in the next* repeat to the end, slst to the first stitch. (36)
Continue to round 5 to make into a square
Large 6.5” square
The circle part of the square is made as below
Using black
Round 1: make a magic circle then ch2 and 11 dc, slst to the first stitch and pull tight. (11)
Round 2: [ch2, 2 hdc] in the same stitch, [2 hdc] in each stitch to end, slst to the first stitch. (22)
Change to green
Round 3: ch2, 1 dc in the same stitch, [2 dc] in the next, *dc 1, [2 dc] in the next* repeat to the end, slst to the first stitch. (33)
Change to white
Round 4: ch2, 1 dc in the same stitch, dc 1, [2 dc] in the next, *dc 2, [2 dc] in the next* repeat to the end, slst to the first stitch. (44)
Continue to round 5 to make into a square
Extra large 8.5” square
Make the circle 2 rounds black, 2 green, 2 white.
Using a red 4 ply yarn or embroidery thread sew veins around the white part of the eye.

Sew black dots in the center of eyes before sewing in place, sew a mouth with black yarn, using white yarn sew two triangle teeth above the mouth. Sew the horns at the top of head, sew the ears at either side of the head.
