Pick and Mix Jungle Mods

Here are some Mods to make different designs for the pick and mix sweater and Romper, so that you can get lots of different looks with one sweater pattern.

Written in English US terms with abbreviations for UK 

sc = single crochet (double crochet UK)

hdc = half double crochet (half treble UK)

dc = double crochet (treble crochet UK)

tr = treble crochet (double treble UK)

ch = chain

slst = slip stitch

blo = back loop only (crochet into the back loop of the stitch

Materials

Dk / weight 3 yarn various different colours for the animals and main colour for each square

4ply yarn in black and white for the eyes on small, medium and large animals or use dk for the extra large

3 and 4mm crochet hooks

Needle

Gauge Square

9 dc x 4 rows = 2” x 2”

Zebra

Small 4” / Medium 5” square

Make the circle part of the square with white

Eyes

Using black embroidery thread or 4ply yarn

In a magic circle, ch1, 6 sc, slst to the first and pull tight. (6)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Muzzle

With light grey

In a magic circle, ch1, sc 2, hdc 6, sc 2, hdc 6, slst to first and pull tight. (16)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Ears

Starting with white

Round 1: in a magic circle, ch1, 9 hdc, slst to the first and pull tight. (9)

Change to dark grey

Round 2: ch1, sc in the same, sc 7, [2 hdc] in the last, slst to the first. (10)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Mane

Cut 4, 4 inch strands of yarn. Fold the strands of yarn in half and pull the center part way through the first row of head, so it's about an inch through forming a loop, then pull the tail ends of yarn through the loop and tighten, snip ends to around 2cm.

Small 4” / Medium 5” square

Make the first 3 rounds of the square in beige, then the fourth round in dark brown

Eyes

Using black embroidery thread or 4ply yarn

In a magic circle, ch1, 6 sc, slst to the first and pull tight. (6)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Ears

Starting with beige

Round 1: in a magic circle, ch1, 9 hdc, slst to first and pull tight. (9)

Change to dark brown

Round 2: ch1, sc in the same, [2 sc] in the next 7, sc 1. (16)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Small 4” / Medium 5” square

Make the circle part of the square in light grey

Eyes

Using black embroidery thread or 4ply yarn

In a magic circle, ch1, 6 sc, slst to the first and pull tight. (6)

Trunk

Round 1: ch6, hdc in the third chain from hook, hdc, 3. (4) Turn

Round 2-3: ch1, hdc in the same, hdc 3. (4) Turn

Round 4: ch1, hdc 2 together x 2. (2) Turn

Round 5-6: ch1, hdc in the same, hdc 1. (2) Turn

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Ears

Starting with dark grey

Round 1: in a magic circle, ch1, sc 2, hdc 2, dc 4, hdc 2, sc 2, slst to the first and pull tight. (12)

join light grey yarn in the second stitch

Round 2: ch1, sc in the same, sc 11, slst to first. (12)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Lion

Small 4” / Medium 5” square

Make the circle part of the square in yellow, make round 5 in the back loops

Eyes

Using black embroidery thread or 4ply yarn

In a magic circle, ch1, 6 sc, slst to the first and pull tight. (6)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Muzzle

Using white

In a magic circle, ch2, 16 dc, slst to the first and pull tight. (16)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Sew a nose with black.

Ears

Make two using yellow

In a magic circle, ch2, 9 hdc, slst to the first and pull tight. (9)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Mane

Using orange

join yarn in the front loops left from round 5, ch1, loop stitch in the same, loop stitch all, slst to first.

Fasten off.

Small 4” / Medium 5” square

Make the first round of the square black then make rounds 2-4 in light grey

Eyes

Using black embroidery thread or 4ply yarn

In a magic circle, ch1, 6 sc, slst to the first and pull tight. (6)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Nose

Using dark grey

In a magic circle, ch2, 9 hdc, slst to the first and pull tight. (9)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing. Sew halfway over the black circle.

Ears

Starting with light grey

Round 1: in a magic circle, ch2, 4 dc, 5 hdc, 4 dc, slst to first and pull tight. (13)

Change to dark grey

Round 2: ch1, sc in the same, [ch1, sc] in each stitch. (13)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Make the first 3 rounds of the square in beige, then the fourth round in brown

Eyes

Using black embroidery thread or 4ply yarn

In a magic circle, ch1, 6 sc, slst to the first and pull tight. (6)

Eye patch

Using brown make two

ch6, hdc in the third chain from hook, hdc 2, [6 hdc] in the last, working along the other side, hdc 3, slst to first. (12)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Sew a nose.

Make the circle part of the square in yellow

Eyes

Using black embroidery thread or 4ply yarn

In a magic circle, ch1, 6 sc, slst to the first and pull tight. (6)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Muzzle

Using white

In a magic circle, ch2, 16 dc, slst to the first and pull tight. (16)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Sew a nose with black.

Ears

ch6, [2 dc] in the fourth chain from hook, dc 1, [2 dc] in the last. (5)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Sew some black dots on the forehead.

Giraffe

Small 4” / Medium 5” square

Make the first 3 rounds of the square in yellow.

Round 4: make the first 14 hdc in yellow then change to the background colour for the rest of the round.

Round 5: ch2, hdc in the same, [2 dc] in the next, ch 1, [2 dc] in the next stitch, hdc 1, sc 5, *hdc 1, [2 dc] in the next, ch1, [2 dc] in the next, hdc 1, sc 5* repeat twice more, slst to the first stitch, then slst to the ch1 corner space to start the next round.

Complete the rest of the square as normal.

Eyes

Using black embroidery thread or 4ply yarn

In a magic circle, ch1, 6 sc, slst to the first and pull tight. (6)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Ears

Make two using yellow

ch5, hdc in the third chain from hook, hdc 1, [2 dc] in the last. (4)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Ossicones

Make two using yellow

Ch5, sc in the second chain from hook, sc 3. (4)

Fasten off (bottom) with a long end for sewing.

Join brown at the top, ch1, *insert hook into same stitch, yarn over pull up a loop, yarn over pull through 2 stitches* x 2.

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Muzzle

With white

In a magic circle, ch1, sc 2, hdc 6, sc 2, hdc 6, slst to first and pull tight. (16)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Make the circle part of the square in yellow

Make two using orange

In a magic circle, ch2, 9 hdc, slst to first and pull tight. (9)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Muzzle

Using white

In a magic circle, ch2, 16 dc, slst to the first and pull tight. (16)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Sew a nose with black yarn, before sewing on, sew three black stripes at each side and three at the top of the head.

Eyes

Using black embroidery thread or 4ply yarn

In a magic circle, ch1, 6 sc, slst to the first and pull tight. (6)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Eye patch

ch4, [2 sc] in the second chain from hook, sc 1, [4 sc] in the last, working along the other side, sc 1, [2 sc] in the last. (10)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing and sew the eyes onto the patches.

Muzzle

In a magic circle, ch2, 16 dc, slst to the first and pull tight. (16)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Ears

Make two using black

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Make the circle part of the square in light grey

Using black embroidery thread or 4ply yarn

In a magic circle, ch1, 6 sc, slst to the first and pull tight. (6)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Muzzle

Using light grey

Round 1: ch6, [3 hdc] in the third chain from hook, hdc 2, [6 hdc] in the last, working along the other side, hdc 2, [3 hdc] in the last, slst to first. (16)

Round 2: ch2, [2 hdc] in the same, [2 hdc] in the next 2, hdc 2, [2 hdc] in the next 6, hdc 2, [2 hdc] in the last 3, slst to first. (28)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Sew two nostrils

Ears

Make two using light grey

Round 1: in a magic circle, ch2, 9 hdc, slst to the first and pull tight. (9)

Round 2: ch1, sc in the same, sc 8. (9)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Make two starting with dark brown

Round 1: ch4, sc in the second chain from the hook, sc 1, [4 sc] in the last, working along the other side, sc 2. (8)

Join beige

Round 2: ch1, hdc in the same, hdc 1, [2 hdc] in the next four, hdc 2. (12)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Muzzle

Using dark brown

In a magic circle, ch2, 16 dc, slst to the first and pull tight. (16)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Sew a nose.

Mane

Separate strands for a fluffy look (I did this by running a needle through each strand)
