Bubbles the Elephant
This cute little Elephant is crocheted from the body up to the head all in one, the legs and arms are crocheted on, then it is continued to the neck and the head and joining the yarn to crochet the trunk, so the only sewing is the ears. It only takes a couple of hours to make!
Written in English US terms with abbreviations for UK
sc=single crochet (double crochet in UK)
ch=chain
mc=magic circle
dec=decrease sc (sc 2 stitches together) (double crochet 2 stitches together UK)
inc=increase (2 sc in next stitch) (2 dc in next stitch UK)
Materials
Around 80 meters of grey chunky polyester yarn (I used Aldi baby Yarn)
A small amount of contrasting yarn
20mm Safety eyes or a small amount of black dk / weight 3 yarn and a 3mm hook to crochet the eyes
6 mm crochet hook I use this set from Amazon*
Polyester toy filling
Needle
All parts are made going around in a spiral.
The Elephant will measure approx 8 inches tall
Arms
Make two starting with contrasting colour
Stuff as you go
Round 1: 6 sc in mc. (6)
Round 2: *inc* x 6. (12)
Change to grey
Round 3: sc all in blo. (12)
Round 4: *sc 4, dec* x 2. (10)
Round 5: sc all. (10)
Round 6: *sc 3, dec* x 2. (8)
Round 7: sc all. (8)
Fasten off.
Ears
Make two in grey
Round 1: 6 sc in mc. (6)
Round 2: *inc* x 6. (12)
Round 3: *sc 1, inc* x 6. (18)
Round 4: *sc 2, inc* x 6. (24)
Change to contrasting colour
Round 5: *sc, ch1* in each stitch.
Fasten off.
Legs
Make two starting with contrasting colour
Stuff as you go
Round 1: 8 sc in mc. (8)
Round 2: *inc* x 8. (16)
Change to grey
Round 3: sc all in blo. (16)
Round 4: *sc 6, dec* x 2. (14)
Round 5: sc all. (14)
Round 6: *sc 5, dec* x 2. (12)
Round 7: *sc 4, dec* x 2. (10)
Round 8: sc all. (10)
Fasten off.
Eyes
Make two using black dk and 3mm hook
Round 1: 6 sc in mc, slst to first. (6)
Fasten off leaving a long end for sewing.
Body
Using grey
Round 1: 9 sc in mc. (9)
Round 2: *inc* x 9. (18)
Round 3: *sc 2, inc* x 6. (24)
Round 4: *sc 3, inc* x 6. (30)
Attaching legs
Round 5: sc 5 through leg and body, sc 2, sc 5 through leg and body, sc 18. (30)
The next round will be worked through the unused stitches from the legs
Round 6: sc 5 through leg and body, sc 2, sc 5 through leg and body, sc 18. (30)
Round 7: sc all. (30)
Round 8: *sc 3, dec* x 6. (24)
Round 9: sc all. (24)
Round 10: *sc 2, dec* x 6. (18)
Attaching arms
Fold arm in half and sc through the front and back of arm and body.
Round 11: sc 4 through arm and body, sc 2, sc 4 through arm and body, sc 8. (18)
Round 12: *sc 1, dec* x 6. (12)
Keep stuffing as you go and continue with the head.
Head
Continuing from the body
Round 1: *sc 1, inc* x 6. (18)
Round 2: *sc 2, inc* x 6. (24)
Round 3: *sc 3, inc* x 6. (30)
Round 4: sc all. (30)
Round 5: sc 9, ch3, skip 3, sc 18. (30)
Round 6: sc 9, sc in each chain, sc 18. (30)
Round 7-10: sc all. (30) place safety eyes between rounds 7 and 8
Round 11: *sc 3, dec* x 6. (24)
Round 12: *sc 2, dec* x 6. (18)
Round 13: *sc 1, dec* x 6. (12)
Round 14: dec x 6. (6)
Fasten off leaving a long end for sewing and close up.
Trunk
Round 1: Join yarn to the first unworked stitch from round 5 of the head, sc 3, sc in the chains. (6)
Round 2-7: sc all. (6)
Lightly stuff.
Fasten off and sew up the opening. Sew some eyebrows.
Sew the ears along the back then the front.
Tail
Insert hook and chain 5, fasten off and snip end.
Hair
Cut 4, 9 inch strands of yarn strands
