Christmas Chocolate Orange Covers

These knit look covers work up lovely and thick using dk yarn. The pattern contains the features for Gingerbread, Reindeer, Snowman, gnome and Robin.

Cicibebe Baltik DK, weight #3 yarn (100% Acrylic 360 metres per 100g)


HOOK AND OTHER MATERIALS

3.5 & 5mm crochet hooks 

Yarn needle


WRITTEN IN ENGLISH US TERMS WITH ABBREVIATIONS FOR UK 

sc = single crochet (double crochet UK)

ch = chain

blo = back loop only (crochet in the back loop of the stitch)

slst = slip stitch

sc2tog =single crochet 2 stitches together

** = repeat between

[ ] = in the same stitch

Bobble stitch = *yarn over, insert hook into stitch, pull up a loop, yarn over pull through 2 loops* x 5 you should have 6 loops on your hook, yarn over and pull through all 6.

GAUGE 

With a 4mm hook

8 sc x 11 Rows = 2”


Pattern notes 


  • The pattern is worked in a spiral, so there is no seam. I used waistcoat stitch (which is a sc but working between the v of the sc below) it gives a knitted look.

  • The finished cover will fit over an 8” chocolate orange. It will have a negative ease (like crochet hats) so that it will fit snug over the chocolate orange.

  • Laying flat the cover will measure 3.5” wide and 3” tall.

  • The length of the gauge is not important as you will be working to the length of 3”.

  • These would also be suitable to make for a tiny preemie or doll's hat!

EYES

Make two for each design with eyes apart from the gnome

Using a 3mm hook and 4ply yarn 

Make a magic circle, ch1, 6 sc in the circle, pull tight, slst to the first and fasten off with a long end. Sew a white line on each eye.

Reindeer

Using beige, working round in a spiral using a 4mm hook

Round 1: make a magic circle, ch1, sc 6 into the circle. (6) 

Round 2: [2 sc] in each stitch. (12) 

Round 3: sc 1, [2 sc] in the next x 6. (18)

Round 3: sc 2, [2 sc] in the next x 6. (24)

Round 4: sc 3, [2 sc] in the next x 6. (30)

Round 5: sc all. (30) Repeat round 5 until the height is 3”, slst 2 stitches and fasten off.


NOSE

Using red

Make a magic circle, ch2, 12 hdc in the circle, pull tight and slst to the first.

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

ANTLERS

Make two in dark brown

Round 1: make a magic circle, ch1, sc 6 into the circle. (6) 

Round 2-4: sc all (6) 

Round 5: sc 3, ch4, sc in second chain from hook, sc 2, sc 1, slst in front loop, of the stitch on main antler,

]sc 3. (6)

Round 6-7: sc all (6) 

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

EARS

Make two using beige

Ch5, sc in the second chain from hook, hdc 2, sc in the last, ch2, slst in the second chain from hook, working along the other side, sc, [hdc, dc] in the next, dc 1, [dc. hdc] in the next, sc in the last, slst to first.

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Robin

Using dark brown, working round in a spiral using a 4mm hook


Round 1: make a magic circle, ch1, sc 6 into the circle. (6) 


Round 2: [2 sc] in each stitch. (12) 


Round 3: sc 1, [2 sc] in the next x 6. (18)


Round 3: sc 2, [2 sc] in the next x 6. (24)


Round 4: sc 3, [2 sc] in the next x 6. (30)


Round 5: sc all. (30) Repeat round 5 until the height is 3”, slst 2 stitches and fasten off.

BREAST

Using red

Row 1: Make a magic circle, ch2, 10 hdc into the circle, pull tight. Turn

Row 2: ch1, hdc 1, [2 hdc] in the next, [2 sc] in the next 6, [2 hdc] in the next, hdc 1. 

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

WINGS

Make two

Ch6, sc in the second chain from hook, [hdc, dc] in the next, dc 1, [dc, hdc] in the next, sc in the last, ch2, slst in the second chain from hook, working along the other side, sc, [hdc, dc] in the next, dc 1, [dc. hdc] in the next, sc in the last, slst to first.

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

HAIR

Cut 4, 4 inch strands of yarn. Fold the strands of yarn in half and pull the center part way through the first row of head, so it's about an inch through forming a loop, then pull the tail ends of yarn through the loop and tighten, snip ends to around 2cm. Sew a beak in yellow.

Gnome 

Starting with hat colour, working round in a spiral using a 4mm hook

HAT

Starting with white

Round 1: make a magic circle, sc 6 into the circle.

Round 2: [2 loop stitch] in each stitch.

Round 3: sc 2 tog x 6. (6)

Round 4-8: sc all. (6)

Round 9: sc 2, [2 sc] in the next x 2. (8)

Round 10: sc 3, [2 sc] in the next x 2. (10)

Round 11: sc 4, [2 sc] in the next x 2. (12)

Round 12: sc 5, [2 sc] in the next x 2. (14)

Round 13: sc 6, [2 sc] in the next x 2. (16)

Round 14: sc 7, [2 sc] in the next x 2. (18)

Round 15: sc 8, [2 sc] in the next x 2. (20)

Round 16: sc 9, [2 sc] in the next x 2. (22)

Round 17: sc 10, [2 sc] in the next x 2. (24)

BEARD

Using white

Row 1: ch8, loop stitch in the second chain from hook, loop stitch 6. (7)

Row 2: ch1, [2 sc] in the first, sc 5, [2 sc] in the last. (9)

Row 3: ch1, loop stitch all. (9)

Row 4: ch1, [2 sc] in the first, sc 7, [2 sc] in the last. 11)

Row 5: ch1, loop stitch all. (9)

Row 6: ch1, [2 sc] in the first, sc 9, [2 sc] in the last. (13)

Row 7: ch1, loop stitch all. (13)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.


NOSE

Join yarn in the middle stitch of row 7 and make a bobble stitch.


Sew some stars on the hat.

Snowman 

Using white, working round in a spiral using a 4mm hook

Round 1: make a magic circle, ch1, sc 6 into the circle. (6) 

Round 2: [2 sc] in each stitch. (12) 

Round 3: sc 1, [2 sc] in the next x 6. (18)

Round 3: sc 2, [2 sc] in the next x 6. (24)

Round 4: sc 3, [2 sc] in the next x 6. (30)

Round 5: sc all. (30) Repeat round 5 until the height is 3”, slst 2 stitches and fasten off.

NOSE

With orange ch5, slst in the second chain from hook, sc 2, hdc 1. Fasten off.  Sew eyes between rounds 10 & 12. Sew nose across the last stitch, between the eyes. Sew a mouth with black.


HAT

Using black

Round 1: make a magic circle, sc 6 into the circle. (6)

Round 2: [2 sc] in each stitch. (12)

Round 3: sc 1, [2 sc] in the next x 6. (18)

Round 4: sc 2, [2 sc] in the next x 6. (24)

Round 5: sc all in blo. (24)

Round 6: sc all. (24)

Round 7:sc all. (24)

Change to green

Round 8: sc all. (24)

Change to black

Round 9: sc all. (24)

Round 10: In flo, [2 hdc] in each stitch. (48)

Fasten off, lightly stuff and sew in place.


SCARF

Sc around the bottom of the cover with green. 

Skip the centre stitch under the nose.

Row 1-4 Sc 3.

Row 5: loop stitch all. Fasten off, snip the loop stitches

Repeat rows 1-5 at the other side of the skipped stitch.

Gingerbread 

Using gingerbread colour, working round in a spiral using a 4mm hook

Round 1: make a magic circle, ch1, sc 6 into the circle. (6) 

Round 2: [2 sc] in each stitch. (12) 

Round 3: sc 1, [2 sc] in the next x 6. (18)

Round 3: sc 2, [2 sc] in the next x 6. (24)

Round 4: sc 3, [2 sc] in the next x 6. (30)

Round 5: sc all. (30) Repeat round 5 until the height is 3”, slst 2 stitches and fasten off.

Sew eyes between rounds 10 & 12, sew cheeks and mouth. 


FROSTING

Using white

Round 1: make a magic circle, ch1, sc 6 into the circle. (6) 

Round 2: [2 sc] in each stitch. (12) 

Round 3: sc 1, [2 sc] in the next x 6. (18)

Round 3: sc 2, [2 sc] in the next x 6. (24)

Round 4: *Ch5, sc in the second chain from hook, sc 3, sc in the same stitch of the circle, sc1, ch3, sc in second chain from hook, sc 2, sc in the same stitch of the circle, sc 2* x 5, sc 2, fasten off.

BOW

Using red, ch4, 3 dc in the 4th chain from hook, ch3, slst in the same, ch3, 3 dc in the same, ch3, slst in the same. 

Fasten off and wrap yarn round the centre, then sew on the last row of head, below the mouth.
