This cluster beanie is crochet from the top down, starting with hdc for the increase rounds then using cluster stitch for the rest.

Written in English US terms with abbreviations for UK

hdc=half double crochet (half treble crochet UK terms)

sc=single crochet (double crochet UK terms)

dc=double crochet (treble crochet UK terms)

Slst=slip stitch

ch=chain

sk=skip

Cl=Cluster stitch,yo, insert hook in st, yo, pull through st, yo, pull through 2 loops on hook, (yo, insert hook in same st, yo, pull through st, yo, pull through 2 loops on hook) 2 times, yo, pull through all 4 loops on hook, ch 1.

Materials

30g Paintbox yarn dk LoveCrafts pistachio green

3.5 and 4mm hook

Gauge square

With 3.5mm hook

Row1 Ch10, hdc in 3rd ch from hook and each chain across. (8) Turn

Row2-4 ch1, hdc in base of ch1, hdc 7. (8) Turn

Square should measure 4cm.

If you're out with a 3.5mm hook try 4mm hook.

If you have problems hitting the length but the width is ok, try dc instead of hdc.

Preemie 1-2lb

Hat to fit 9-10” head,  3.5”tall when finished

Starting with 3.5mm hook

Rnd1 ch4, slst to first to form a ring, ch2 and 11 hdc in ring, slst to top of ch2. (12)

Rnd2 ch2, hdc in same, 2 hdc in all, slst to first. (24)

Rnd3 ch2, hdc in same, hdc 1, *inc, hdc 1* repeat to end, slst to first. (36)

Rnd4 ch2, hdc in same, hdc 2, *inc, hdc 2* repeat to last 8 stitches and hdc, slst to first. (46) Turn

Change to 4mm hook 

Rnd5 ch1, sc all. (46) Turn

Row6 ch1, *cl, sk1* repeat to end, slst to first. (23 clusters) Turn

Row7 ch1, *sc in ch1 space, ch1* repeat to end, slst to first. Turn

Row8 ch1, *cluster in each ch1 space* repeat to end, slst to first. (23 clusters) Turn

Repeat rows 7 and 8 until work measures 3.5 inches.

Fasten off and sew in ends, make a pompom if you want to add one.

Preemie 3-4lb

Hat to fit 10-11” head,  4”tall when finished

Starting with 3.5mm hook

Rnd1 ch4, slst to first to form a ring, ch2 and 11 hdc in ring, slst to top of ch2 (12)

Rnd2 ch2, hdc in same, 2 hdc in all, slst to first (24)

Rnd3 ch2, hdc in same, hdc 1, *inc, hdc 1* repeat to end, slst to first (36)

Rnd4 ch2, hdc in same, hdc 2, *inc, hdc 2* repeat to end, slst to first (48) Turn

Change to 4mm hook 

Rnd5 ch1, sc all (increasing 4 evenly). (52) Turn

Row6 ch1, *cl, sk1* repeat to end, slst to first.  (26 clusters) Turn

Row7 ch1, *sc in ch1 space, ch1* repeat to end, slst to first. Turn

Row8 ch1, *cluster in each ch1 space* repeat to end, slst to first. (26 clusters) Turn

Repeat rows 7 and 8 until work measures 4 inches.

Fasten off and sew in ends, make a pompom if you want to add one.
