Cosy Collar Cardigan

This cute collar cardigan is made from the top down then joining the yarn to make the collar, button band and sleeves, it works up lovely and cosy and has two collar options.

Size preemie

Finished chest 14”

Shoulder to hem 7”

Materials

Paintbox yarns DK Shade 149 Candy Floss Pink and Duck Egg Blue (276 metres per 100g)

3.5 and 4mm crochet hooks

4-7 x 15-20mm buttons

Written in English US terms with abbreviations for UK terms

sc = single crochet (double crochet UK)

hdc = half double crochet (half treble crochet UK)

dc = double crochet (treble crochet UK)

fpdc = front post half double crochet (front post half treble crochet UK)

ch = chain

blo = back loop only (crochet in the back loop of the stitch)

slst = slip stitch

** = repeat between

[ ] = in the same stitch

V = [hdc, ch1, hdc] or [dd, ch1, dc]

Gauge 

With 4mm hook

9 hdc x 5 Rows = 2” x 2”

Preemie 4-6lb

Ch41 with a 4mm hook (first row is wrong side facing)

Row 1: sc in second chain from hook, sc 39. (40) Turn

Row 2: ch1, hdc 5, [3 hdc] in the next, hdc 7, [3 hdc] in the next, hdc 12, [3 hdc] in next, hdc 7, [3 hdc] in next, hdc 5. (48) Turn

Row 3: ch1, hdc 6, [3 hdc] in the next, hdc 9, [3 hdc] in the next, hdc 14, [3 hdc] in the next, hdc 9, [3 hdc] in the next, hdc 6. (56) Turn

Row 4: ch1, hdc 7, [3 hdc] in the next, hdc 11, [3 hdc] in the next, hdc 16, [3 hdc] in the next, hdc 11, [3 hdc] in the next, hdc 7. (64) Turn

Row 5: ch1, hdc 8, [3 hdc] in the next, hdc 13, [3 hdc] in the next, hdc 18, [3 hdc] in the next, hdc 13, [3 hdc] in the next, hdc 8. (72) Turn

Row 9: (Divide for arm holes) ch1, hdc 12, [3 hdc] in the next, skip 21, [3 hdc] in the next, hdc 26, [3 hdc] in the next, skip 21, [3 hdc] in the next, hdc 12. (62) Turn

Row 10: ch1, hdc all. (62) Turn

Repeat row 10 until work measures approx 6” from the shoulder, ending with a wrong side row. Continue to the bottom ribbing and button bands.

Bottom rib edging

Change to a 3.5mm hook

Row 1: ch6, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc 4, slst 2 stitches of the bottom of cardigan. (2 slsts in total for joining) (5) Turn

Row 2: (in blo) ch1, sc 5. (5) Turn

Row 3: (in blo) ch1, sc 5, slst 2 stitches of the bottom of cardigan. (2 slsts in total for joining) (5) Turn

Repeat Rows 2-3 until you get to the other side of the cardigan. Continue to the button bands.

Buttonhole band

Using a 3.5mm hook

Continuing from bottom ribbing

Row 1: ch1, sc up to the top. (3 sc per 2 rows of hdc) Turn

Mark out with stitch markers or scraps of yarn where you would like the button holes to be.

Row 2: ch1, sc in the same, sc all (ch1 and skip 1 where the markers are). Turn


Row 3: ch1, sc all. including the ch1s. Fasten off.

Button band

Using a 3.5mm hook

With front facing join yarn at the top right 

Row 1: ch1, sc down to the bottom. (3 sc per 2 rows of hdc) Turn

Row 2: ch1, sc all. Turn

Row 3: ch1, sc all. 

Fasten off. Sew buttons to match up with the buttonholes. Continue to the collar of your choice.

Lace collar

With the right side facing, using a 3.5mm hook, join yarn in 3rd back bump of round 1 

Row 1: ch1, *hdc 4, [2 hdc] in the next* x 7, hdc 1. (43)

Row 2: [ch3, hdc] in the first, *skip 2, [hdc, ch1, hdc]* repeat to end. (15 v stitches)

Row 3: ch1, fpdc, ch1, [dc, ch1] x 5 in the ch1 space, fpdc 1, *skip next V, fpdc, ch1, [dc, ch1] x 5 in the ch1 space, fpdc 1* repeat to end, slst to the side of the first row, slst in the skipped back bump. (8 shells)

Row 4: ch1, *[sc, ch2, sc] in each ch1 space* x 6, **slst to the ch1 space two rows below,  *[sc, ch2, sc] in each ch1 spacex 6** repeat to end, slst to the side of the first row, slst to the skipped back bump.

Ribbed collar

With the right side facing, using a 3.5mm hook, join yarn in 2nd back bump of round 1 

Row 1: ch6, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc 4, slst 1 stitch of the neck. (1 slsts in total for joining) (5) Turn

Row 2: (in blo) ch1, sc 5. (5) Turn

Row 3: (in blo) ch1, sc 5, slst 1 stitch of the neck. (1 slsts in total for joining) (5) Turn

Repeat Rows 2-3 until you get to the other side of the cardigan skipping the last back bump.

Sleeves 

 

With the wrong side facing, using a 4mm hook

Row 1: join yarn to the first unworked stitch under the arm, ch1, hdc 25, slst to the first. (25) Turn

Repeat row 1 until the sleeve measures 6” from the shoulder. Continue to cuffs.

Cuffs

Change to a 3.5mm hook

Row 1: ch6, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc 4, slst 3 stitches of the sleeve. (3 slsts in total for joining) (5) Turn

Row 2: (in blo) ch1, sc 5. (5) Turn

Row 3: (in blo) ch1, sc 5, slst 3 stitches of the sleeve. (3 slsts in total for joining) (5) Turn

Repeat rows 2-3 until you get to the other side, fasten off with a long end and sew the seam.
