Elephant Applique
These Elephant appliques are suitable for baby clothing or blankets.
Small elephant measures approx 3 inch tall by 4 inch wide and large 4.5 inch tall by 5 inch wide.
Materials
Small amounts of Dk / weight 3 yarn in grey and any contrasting colour
3mm crochet hook I use this set from Amazon*
Written in English US terms with abbreviations for UK
sc = single crochet (double crochet in UK)
hdc = half double crochet (half treble crochet UK)
dc = double crochet (treble crochet UK)
ch = chain
slst = slip stitch
* * = repeat between
inc = increase (crochet 2 stitches into the same stitch)
dec = decrease (crochet 2 stitches together)
Small Elephant
Head
With main colour work in spiral rounds, do not turn, do not join.
Round 1: 6 sc in magic circle. (6)
Round 2: *inc* x 6. (12)
Round 3: *sc 1, inc* x 6. (18)
Round 4: *sc 2, inc* x 6. (24) Turn and continue with the body that will now be worked in rows.
Body
Row 1: ch 1, sc in the same, sc in the next 4. (5) Turn
Row 2: ch1, 2 sc in the same, sc 3, 2 sc in the last stitch. (7) Turn
Row 3: ch1, 2 sc in the same, sc 5, 2 sc in the last stitch. (9) Turn
Row 4: ch1, 1 sc in the same and the next 8. (9) Turn
Row 5: ch1, sc in the same and the next 3, leaving the rest unworked. (4) Turn
Row 6: ch1, sc in the same, sc 3. (4) Turn
Cut yarn after finishing row 8 and fasten off.
For second leg, skip 1 sc from the first leg and join in the yarn
Row 5-6: ch1, sc in the same and the next 3. (4) Turn
Cut yarn after finishing row 6 and fasten off.
Trunk
Ch 10 using main colour
Sc in second ch from hook, 2 sc in each of the next 2, sc 1. 2 hdc in each of the next 2, 1 hdc in each of the next 3.
Fasten off.
Ears
Starting with contrasting colour
Make two
Row 1: sc 6 in a magic circle. (6) Turn
Row 2: ch1, sc in the same, 2 sc in the next stitch, sc 2, 2 sc in the next stitch, sc 1. (8)
Change to grey
Row 3: ch3, sc in the same, *ch2, sc in the next* repeat to end.
Ch1, sc back up to the start along the inner colour to finish off.
Fasten off leaving a long end to sew.
Bow
Ch3 in colour you want bow
2 hdc in the last ch from the hook, ch2, slst to the beginning, ch2, 2 hdc, ch2, slst to end.
Fasten off leaving a long end and wrap round the middle a few times then sew in place.
Assembly
Sew ears and trunk in place.
Sew three toes with your colour of choice at the bottom of each leg, sew eyes with black embroidery thread.
For the tail cut a 10 inch strand of yarn fold in half and join so that two tails of yarn are the same size, holding the two strands together ch3 and fasten off, snip the end, leaving a small tassel.
Large Elephant
Head
With main colour work in spiral rounds, do not turn, do not join.

Row 1: ch1, sc in the same, sc in the next 8. (9) Turn
Row 2: ch1, 2 sc in the same, sc 7, 2 sc in the last stitch. (11) Turn
Row 3: ch1, 2 sc in the same, sc 9, 2 sc in the last stitch. (13) Turn
Row 4: ch1, 2 sc in the same, sc 11, 2 sc in the last stitch. (15) Turn
Row 5: ch1, 1 sc in the same and the next 10. (15) Turn
Row 6: ch1, sc in the same and the next 6, leaving the rest unworked. (7) Turn
Row7-8: ch1, sc in the same, sc 6. (7) Turn
Cut yarn after finishing row 8 and fasten off.

Starting with light grey/blue/pink
Make two
Row 1: sc 6 in a magic circle. (6) Turn
Row 2: ch1, sc in the same, 2 sc in the next stitch, sc 2, 2 sc in the next stitch, sc (8) Turn
Row 3: ch1, sc in the same, sc 1, 2 sc in each of the next 4 stitches, sc 2. (12) Turn
Row 4: ch1, sc in the same, sc 1, 2 sc in each of the next 3 stitches, sc 2, 2 sc in each of the next 3 stitches, sc 2. (18) Turn
Change to grey
Row 5: ch2, sc in the same, *ch1, sc in the next* repeat to end.
Ch1, sc back up to the start along the inner colour to finish off.
Fasten off leaving a long end to sew.
Bow
Ch4 with colour you want bow
3 dc in last ch from hook, ch3, slst to end, ch3, 3 dc, ch3, slst to end. Fasten off leaving a long end and wrap round the middle a few times then sew in place.
Assembly
Sew five toes with your colour of choice at the bottom of each leg, sew eyes with a few stitches of black and white dot for the middle or make sleepy eyes with black embroidery thread.
