Hedgehog Wall Hanging

This wall hanging can be made using any of the pick and mix squares, there is farmyard, woodland and jungle animals, spooky squares and also Christmas to choose from. The links are at the top of this website. It will be a lovely wall hanging for a babies nursery or child’s bedroom making their favourite animals!

Materials

Dk / weight 3 yarn

4mm crochet hook

9” Wooden dowel

Scissors

Written in English US terms

sc = single crochet (double crochet in UK)

hdc = half double crochet (half treble crochet UK)

dc = double crochet (treble crochet UK)

tr = treble crochet (double treble UK)

bs = Bobble stitch *yarn over, insert hook into stitch, pull up a loop, yarn over pull through 2 loops* x 4 you should have 5 loops on your hook, yarn over and pull through all 5.

slst = slip stitch

[ ] = in the same stitch

* * = repeat between

ch = chain

The wall hanging will measure approx 8” square excluding tassels

Using a 4mm hook, starting with black

Round 1: make a magic circle then ch1 and 9 sc, slst to the first stitch and pull tight. (9)  

Change to beige

Round 2: ch1, sc all. (9)

Round 3: ch1, hdc all. (9)

Round 4: ch2, *[2 hdc] in each stitch* slst to the first stitch. (18) 

Round 5: ch2, 1 hdc in the same stitch, [2 hdc] in the next, *hdc 1, [2 hdc] in the next* repeat to the end, slst to the first stitch. (27) 

Round 6: ch2, 1 hdc in the same stitch, hdc 1, [2 hdc] in the next, *hdc 2, [2 hdc] in the next* repeat to the end, slst to the first stitch. (36) 

Round 7: ch2, 2 hdc in the same stitch, hdc 2, [2 hdc] in the next, *hdc 3, [2 hdc] in the next* repeat to the end, slst to the first stitch. (46) 

Round 8: ch2, 2 hdc in the same stitch, hdc 3, [2 hdc] in the next, hdc 4, [hdc 1, change to brown, hdc in same], *hdc 4, [2 hdc] in the next* repeat to the end, slst to the first stitch. (56) Turn

Round 9: continue with brown, ch1, *sc, tr* x 22, change to beige, sc 12, slst to the last stitch. (56) Turn 

Join main colour in the second brown stitch

Round 10: [ch3, 1 dc, 1 tr] in the same, ch1, [1 tr, 2 dc] in the next stitch, hdc 2, sc 8, hdc 2, *[2 dc, 1 tr] in the next, ch1, [1 tr, 2 dc] in the next, hdc 2, sc 8, hdc 2* repeat twice more, slst to the first stitch, then slst to the ch1 corner space to start the next round. (72) 

Round 11: [ch3, 1 dc, ch2, 2 dc] in the same stitch for the first corner, dc 18, *[2 dc, ch2, 2 dc], dc 18* repeat twice more, slst to the first stitch, then slst to the ch2 corner space to start the next round. (88)

Round 12: [ch3, 1 dc, ch2, 2 dc] in the same stitch for the first corner, dc 22, *[2 dc, ch2, 2 dc], dc 22* repeat twice more, slst to the first stitch, then slst to the ch2 corner space to start the next round. (104) Turn

Round 13: sc 2, bs, *sc 3 bs* x 5, sc 3, [sc 1, ch2, sc 2] in the corner, sc 2, bs, *sc 3 bs* x 5, sc 3, [sc, ch2, sc 2] in the corner, sc 2, bs, *sc 3 bs* x 5, sc 3, [sc 1, ch2, sc 2] in the corner, sc 2, bs, *sc 3 bs* x 5, sc 3, [sc, ch2, sc 2] in the corner, slst to the first. Turn, slst to the ch2 corner.


Round 14: [ch1, 1 sc, ch2, 1 sc] in the same stitch for the first corner, dc 29, *[sc, ch2, sc], sc 29* repeat twice more, slst to the first stitch, then slst to the ch2 corner space to start the next round. (120)

Single crochet across the top to attach the wooden dowel video here, then ch58, slst to the first stitch and fasten off.

Cut 28, 12” strands of yarn. Fold two strands of yarn in half and pull the centre part way through the bottom of the square, so it's about an inch through forming a loop, then pull the tail ends of yarn through the loop and tighten. Skip one stitch and repeat across the bottom.
