This cute little shrug is quick and simple to make. It is made from the top down using a simple hdc, then adding a shell edging around the body and sleeves.

Pattern notes
Row 1 is right side facing.
The ch1 at the beginning does not count as a stitch.
The ch1 on the increases counts as a stitch.
The shell pattern may need to be altered depending on your stitch counts. The shell pattern is multiples of 5 and when I got near the end, I adjusted to not skip 1 a couple of times so that I ended on the right stitch to finish.
Before dividing the armholes, the sides will start to decrease and keep decreasing until the end.
My example is a size 0-3 months.
You may want to add more buttons to the bigger sizes and mark them out on row 2 of the eging.

Edging
Using main colour
Row 1: ch1, sc in the same, sc all around and slst to first. (I did 3 sc per 2 rows of hdc up the sides)
Mark out the row below where the decreasing started at each side. (see below photo)
Sc up the side, around the neck, back down the other side and across the bottom and slst to the first.
Using contrasting colour (or you can use the same colour)
Row 2: ch1, *skip 1, [5 dc] in the next, skip 1, slst in the next* repeat until you reach the first marker, sc up to the top, when you reach two stitches before the top, ch2, skip 1 (to create a button hole), continue to sc around until you reach the second marker, *skip 1, [5 dc] in the next, skip 1, slst in the next* repeat to the end, slst to first. (ensuring you do your first shell in the same row as the last at the other side)
Armholes
Using contrasting colour
Row 1: ch1, *skip 1, [5 dc] in the next, skip 1, slst in the next* repeat to the end, slst to first. Fasten off.
