This is a great project for using up some scrap yarn! I used up quite a lot of mine and enjoyed making a few squares between other projects. I made this blanket using the medium sized pick and mix squares. The finished has an interlocking jigsaw type look.

I made a modification to the squares as I wanted to use them for this blanket and use the join as you go method (details below).

These are the pick and mix squares that I have so far farmyard woodland jungle Spring/Summer

Christmas Spooky so you could choose any you like and use any colours to make a fun and unique blanket!

My finished blanket measured 29 x 36”

Written in English US terms with abbreviations for UK 

sc = single crochet (double crochet UK)

hdc = half double crochet (half treble UK)

ch = chain

slst = slip stitch

[ ] = in the same stitch

* * = repeat between

hdc cluster = 3 half double crochet (3 half treble UK)

Materials

Dk / weight 3 yarn various different colours for the animals and main colour for each square.

4ply yarn in black and white for the eyes

3 and 4mm crochet hooks

Needle

Modification I made:

I made the medium squares but on rows 6 and 7, I did hdc instead of dc, then I did a row 8 as follows, still using the same colour:

Row 8: [ch2, hdc, ch2, 2 hdc] in ch2 space, skip 1, [3 hdc] in the next, *skip 2, 3 hdc in the next* x 5, skip 1, **[2 hdc, ch2, 2 hdc] in the corner, skip 1, [3 hdc] in the next, *skip 2, 3 hdc in the next* x 5, skip 1** repeat twice more, slst to first.

I made 20 of my chosen squares up to row 8. I then changed to a denim blue for the main colour and did rounds 9 and 10 as below (on the round 10 I joined with the join as you go here )

Round 9-10: [ch2, hdc, ch2, 2 hdc] in the ch2 space, hdc cluster between each cluster [2hdc, ch2, 2 hdc] in each corner, slst to first, slst to ch2 space.

Border

Using main colour

Round 1-2: [ch2, hdc, ch2, 2 hdc] in the ch2 space, hdc cluster between each cluster [2hdc, ch2, 2 hdc] in each corner, slst to first, slst to ch2 space.

Change colour

Round 3: [ch2, hdc, ch2, 2 hdc] in the ch2 space, hdc in each stitch, [2 hdc, ch2, 2 hdc] in each corner, slst to first, slst to ch2 space.

Round 4: [ch1, sc, ch2, sc] in the ch2 space, sc each stitch, [sc, ch2, sc] in each corner, slst to first, slst to ch2 space.

Round 5: [ch1, sc, ch2, sc] in the ch2 space, sc each stitch, [sc, ch2, sc] in each corner, slst to first.

Fasten off.
