Safari Squidgems
These cute little safari creatures are part of my squidgems collection. They are quick and easy to work up. This collection features Elephant, Lion, Zebra and Leopard.
Yarn
DK, light weight, #3 yarn in grey, brown, mustard, white, yellow, black and pink.
Sport weight, 4 ply, # 2 yarn or Embroidery thread for the eyes in white, blue, green, brown and black. I used blue for the elephant and zebra, green for the lion and brown for the leopard.
Hook & Other Materials
US Size C (2.5mm) crochet hook I use this set from Amazon*

Written in English US terms with abbreviations for UK terms
sc=single crochet (double crochet in UK)
hdc=half double crochet (half treble crochet UK)
dc=double crochet (treble crochet UK)
ch=chain
slst=slip stitch
mc=magic circle
inc=increase
dec=decrease
Loop stitch= Wrap the yarn from front to back over the index finger of your yarn hand.
The length of the loop depends on how loose or tight you wrap the yarn in this step.
With the yarn loop still on your index finger, yarn over (yo) the hook and draw the yarn through the 2 loops on your hook.

Head / Body for all
Using grey for the elephant, mustard for the lion, white for the zebra and yellow for the leopard.
Round 1 : 6 sc in mc. (6)
Round 2: *inc* x 6. (12)
Round 3: *sc 1, inc* x 6. (18)
Round 4: *sc 2, inc* x 6. (24)
Round 5: *sc 3, inc* x 6. (30)
Round 6: *sc 4, inc* x 6. (36)
Round 7: *sc 5, inc* x 6. (42)
Rounds 8-20: sc all. (42) Place a marker at round 8 for the eyes.
Round 21: *sc 5, dec* x 6. (36)
Start stuffing and continue throughout.
Round 22: *sc 4, dec* x 6. (30)
Round 23: *sc 3, dec* x 6. (24)
Round 24: *sc 2, dec* x 6. (18)
Round 25: *sc 1, dec* x 6. (12)
Round 26: *dec* x 6. (6)
Fasten off and sew closed.
Eyes for all
Using embroidery thread or 4ply yarn. Start with black
Round 1: 6 sc in a mc, slst to first.
Round 2: ch1, 2 sc in the same, 2 sc in each of the next 2, join eye colour and 2 sc in each of the next 3, slst to first. (12) Fasten off black leaving a long end, fasten off blue.
Round 3: join white at the other side at the beginning of the eye colour, ch1, sc across the eye colour part and slst into the first black, fasten off leaving a long black and white strand for sewing eyes to the head. Sew two white lines at the top left side of each eye.
Legs for all
Make two in body colour, black for Zebra
Round 1 : 6 sc in mc. (6)
Round 2: *inc* x 6. (12)
Rounds 3-4: sc all. (12)
Round 5: *dec* x 6. (6)
Fasten off with a long end for sewing and stuff.
Arms for all
Make two in body colour
Round 1 : 6 sc in mc. (6)
Rounds 2-5: sc all. (6)
Fasten off, no need to stuff.
Elephant
Trunk
Using grey
Round1 : 8 sc in mc. (8)
Round 2: (in blo) sc all. (8)
Round 3: sc all. (8)
Round 4: *sc 3, inc* x 2. (10)
Rounds 5-6: sc all. (10)
Round 7: *sc 4, inc* x 2. (12)
Rounds 8: sc all. (12)
Fasten off with a long end for sewing.
Ears
Make two in grey
Ch18 slst to first to form a circle
Round 1: Ch1, sc in same and next 17, slst to first (18)
Round 2: Sc 2, inc* x 6. (24)
Round 3: Sc all. (24)
Round 4: Sc 3, inc* x 6 (30)
Round 5-6: sc all. (30)
Fold in half and do the next round through the front and back to close the ear up.
Round 7: sc, hdc 1, 2 dc in each of the next two, hdc 1, sc 1 in each of the next two, hdc 1 in each of the next two, 2 dc in each of the next three, hdc 1, sc 1 in each of the next two.
Fasten off with a long end for sewing.
Pin the eyes so the top is level with round 8 and sew in place.
Sew the trunk and ears, sew 3 stitches of pink for the cheeks.
Sew the legs and arms in place.
Join 2 strands of grey yarn to center back and ch6, fasten off and make a tassel at the end of the tail.
Zebra
Ears
Make two starting with white
Round 1 : 6 sc in mc. (6)
Round 2: *sc, inc* x 6. (12)
Round 3: sc all. (12)
Change to black
Round 4: sc all. (12)
Fasten off with a long end for sewing.
Muzzle
Using black
Round 1 : 6 sc in mc. (6)
Round 2: *inc* x 6. (12)
Round 3: *sc 1, inc* x 6. (18)
Fasten off with a long end for sewing.
Mane
Round 1: Ch18, sc in second ch from hook and each stitch across. (17)
Round 2: Ch1, loop stitch in each stitch to the end, then loop stitch down the other side from the chain 18.
Pin the eyes so the top is level with round 8 and sew in place, sew some eyebrows.
Sew the muzzle, mane and ears, sew 3 stitches of pink for the cheeks.
Sew the legs and arms in place.
Join 2 strands of white yarn to center back and ch6, fasten off and sew in the ends. Then with black yarn make a tassel at the end of the tail.
Lion
Ears
Make two using body colour
Round 1 : 6 sc in mc. (6)
Round 2: *inc* x 6. (12)
Rounds 3-4: sc all. (12)
Round 5: *sc 2, dec* x 3. (9)
Fasten off with a long end for sewing.
Muzzle
Using white
Round 1 : 6 sc in mc. (6)
Round 2: *inc* x 6. (12)
Round 3: *sc 1, inc, x 6. (18)
Fasten off with a long end for sewing.
Sew a nose and mouth with black yarn.
Mane
Round 1: Ch30, sc in second ch from hook and each stitch across. (29)
Round 2: Ch1, loop stitch in each stitch to the end, then loop stitch down the other side from the chain 30, so you have 2 rows of loop stitch.
Fasten off with a long end for sewing.
Front Mane
Round 1: Ch7, sc in second ch from hook and each stitch across. (6)
Round 2: Ch1, loop stitch in each stitch to the end, then loop stitch down the other side from the chain 6, so you have 2 rows of loop stitch.
Fasten off with a long end for sewing.
Pin the eyes so the top is level with round 8 and sew in place, sew the muzzle and sew some eyebrows.
Sew the mane and then ears, sew front mane between ears. Sew the arms and legs.
Join 2 strands of mustard yarn to center back and ch6, fasten off and sew in the ends. Then with brown yarn make a tassel at the end of the tail.
Leopard
Ears
Make two using body colour
Round 1 : 6 sc in mc. (6)
Round 2: *inc* x 6. (12)
Rounds 3-4: sc all. (12)
Round 5: *sc 2, dec* x 3. (9)
Fasten off with a long end for sewing.
Muzzle
Using white
Round 1 : 6 sc in mc. (6)
Round 2: *inc* x 6. (12)
Round 3: *sc 1, inc, x 6. (18)
Fasten off with a long end for sewing.
Sew a nose and mouth with brown yarn.
Pin the eyes so the top is level with round 8 and sew in place.
Sew the ears, arms and legs. Sew 3 stitches in pink for cheeks. Sew brown spots randomly all over with 3 or 4 stitches, do them in different directions.
Then using a darker brown embroidery thread, sew an outline around each spot. For the tail, join yellow yarn and pull through a loop and chain 6, fasten off sew in the ends and cut 3, 3 inch strands of brown yarn to make a tassel at the end of the tail.
