This shell effect dress is made from the top down with a round yoke. It has a button opening at the back so it has plenty of space for putting over babies' heads.

1 x 10-15mm buttons
Gauge Square
With 4mm hook
Row1 Ch10, hdc in 3rd ch from hook and each chain across. (8) Turn
Row2-4 ch1, hdc in base of ch1, hdc 7. (8) Turn
Square should measure just over 4.5cm.
If you're out with a 4mm hook try 4.5mm hook.
If you have problems hitting the length but the width is ok, try dc (treble crochet) instead of hdc.
Always ch1 and hdc in same to start row, unless stated
Ch62 with 4mm hook
Row1 1 hdc in 3rd ch from hook, hdc 5, inc, *hdc 6, inc, seven times, hdc to end.. (68) Turn
Row2 ch1, 1 hdc in base of ch1, hdc 6, inc, *hdc 7, inc, seven times, hdc to end. (76) Turn
Row3 ch1, 1 hdc in base of ch1, hdc 7, inc, *hdc 8, inc* seven times, hdc to end. (84) Turn
Row4 ch1, 1 hdc in base of ch1, hdc8, inc, *hdc 9, inc* seven times, hdc to end. (92) Turn
Row5 ch1, 1 hdc in base of ch1, hdc 9, inc, *hdc 10, inc* seven times, hdc to end. (100) Turn

Change to 4.5mm hook
Row13 ch1,dc in base of ch1, (sk1, shell in next, sk1, dc1) repeat to end, slst to top of first dc. (26 shells and 26dc)
Row14 ch1, fpdc in base dc, **shell in each ch1 space, fpdc ** repeat to end, slst to first fpdc. (26 shells and 26dc)
Repeat Row 14 until work measures approximately 20 Inches from shoulder.
Fasten off.
Button band
Using a 3.5mm hook
Join yarn at the left side of the back, ch1, dc from the bottom up to the top.
Fasten off.
Then join yarn at the top right side, ch1, dc from the top right down to the bottom.
Fasten off.
Sew in all the ends, sew the flappy bit down that hook is pointing to on the 3rd photo. Sew a button at the top left, that fits through the dc.
