Row 21: ch1, hdc all. (158) Turn
Repeat row 21 until work measures 19.5” from the shoulder, ending with a right side row. Continue to the bottom edging.
Bottom edging
Continuing from the bottom sc up the side of the cardigan, sc around the neck and back down to the bottom of the other side, (I found 3 sc per two rows of hdc worked out) this gives the cardigan a better edge for the ribbing. (The bottom ribbing is 1.5”)
Change to a 3.5mm hook
Row 1: ch10, sc in 2nd chain from the hook, sc in each chain back to the bottom of the cardigan, join to the next stitch of the bottom of the cardigan using a slst then work one more slst into the next stitch. (2 slsts in total for joining) (9) Turn
Row 2: ch1, sc all in blo. (9) Turn
Row 3: (in blo) ch1, sc all back to the bottom of the cardigan, join to the next stitch of the bottom of the cardigan using a slst then work one more slst into the next stitch. (2 slsts in total for joining) (9) Turn
Repeat Rows 2-3 until you get to the other side of the cardigan and continue to the button band.
Button/Buttonhole Bands
If making buttonholes mark out where you want the button holes, where your markers are (I did my buttonholes on a row 3 (working back towards the cardigan) and did sc 3, ch2, skip 1 stitch, sc 2). Then on the next row sc 2, sc 1 in the ch2, sc 3.
Row 1: ch7, sc in 2nd chain from the hook, sc in each chain back to the edge of the cardigan, join to the next stitch of the edge of the cardigan using a slst then work one more slst into the next stitch. (2 slsts in total for joining) (6) Turn
Row 2: ch1, sc all in blo. (6) Turn
Row 3: (in blo) ch1, sc all back to the edge of the cardigan, join to the next stitch of the edge of the cardigan using a slst then work one more slst into the next stitch. (2 slsts in total for joining) (6) Turn
Repeat Rows 2-3 until you get to the other side of the cardigan.
Fasten off and sew your buttons on to match the button holes and weave in all ends.
