Materials
Small amounts of dk / weight 3 cotton yarn in shades dark brown, light brown, yellow and any contrasting colour
4.5mm crochet hook
9” wooden dowel like these
Written in English US terms with abbreviations for UK
sc = single crochet (double crochet in UK)
dc = double crochet (treble crochet UK)
slst = slip stitch
blo = back loop only (crochet into the back loop of the stitch
[ ] = in the same stitch
* * = repeat between
ch = chain
ps = medium puff stitch *yarn over insert hook into stitch, pull up a loop* x 2, 5 stitches on hook, yarn over pull through all 5, ch1.
Square
Starting with dark brown
Round 1: make a magic circle then ch2 and 16 dc, slst to the first stitch. (16)
Fasten off.
Change to light brown
Round 2: ch1, ps in each stitch, slst to the first ch1 space. (16)
Fasten off.
Join yellow in any ch1 space
Round 3: [ch3, 3 dc] in same,*remove hook from stitch and insert in top of first dc from front to back, insert into the last dc and pull loop through, ch2, [4 dc] into next ch1 space* repeat to end, ch2, slst to the first ch2 space. (16 petals)
Fasten off.
Join contrasting colour in any ch2 space
Round 4: [ch3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in the same stitch for the first corner, [3 dc] in between each of the next 3 clusters below, *[3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in the next ch2 space, [3 dc] in between the next 3 clusters below* repeat twice more, slst to the first stitch, slst to the ch2 space. (60)
Round 5: [ch3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in the same stitch for the first corner, [3 dc] in between each of the next 4 clusters below, *[3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in the next ch2 space, [3 dc] in between the next 4 clusters below* repeat twice more, slst to the first stitch, slst to the ch2 space. (72)
Round 6: [ch3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in the same stitch for the first corner, [3 dc] in between each of the next 5 clusters below, *[3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in the next ch2 space, [3 dc] in between the next 5 clusters below* repeat twice more, slst to the first stitch, slst to the ch2 space, slst to the stitch before the ch2 space. Attaching to wooden dowel
With the right side facing
sc across the granny square and the dowel, when you reach the end, sc in the stitch after the ch2 corner, ch58, slst to the first stitch.
Fasten off and sew in ends.
Tassels
Cut 23, 14” strands of yarn. Fold the strands of yarn in half and pull the center part way through each stitch, so it's about an inch through forming a loop, then pull the tail ends of yarn through the loop and tighten.
