Tint and Tone Beanie

This beanie is quick and easy to work up using simple stitches, it is worked in joined rounds, that are turned, the seam is very minimal. It can be made in one colour or as many as you want.

MATERIALS 

Super Chunky / weight 6 yarn. I used Hobbii Tint & Tone 100% merino wool 80 meters per 100g

7.5 and 8mm crochet hooks

Needle



WRITTEN IN ENGLISH US CROCHET TERMS WITH ABBREVIATIONS FOR UK 

sc = single crochet (double crochet UK)

dc = double crochet (treble crochet UK)

slst = slip stitch

ch = chain

[ ] = in the same stitch

blo = back loop only (work the stitches in the back loop)

* * = repeat between

( ) = repeat the repeats x required amount



GAUGE 

With 8mm hook

Row 1: Ch11, sc in second chain from hook, dc, *sc, dc* x 4. (10) Turn

Row 2: ch1, *sc, dc* x 5. (10) Turn

Repeat rows 2 until 10 rows are worked, square should measure 4” x 4”


PATTERN NOTES

  • The pattern stitch used is the lemon peel stitch also known as the griddle stitch. Sc in the previous dc, dc in the previous sc. You will always start with a sc and end with a dc.

  • This beanie is worked from the top down.

  • Each size is written separately.

  • The pattern is worked in joined rounds that are turned after each round. This helps with a neat seam and brings out the texture of the stitch.

  • The ch1 does not count as a stitch.

  • Example of how pattern works (*sc, dc* repeat between * * x 1, *[sc, dc] in the next* x 2 repeat between * * x 2) , repeat between ( ) x 5.

PREEMIE 

Using a 8 mm hook

Round 1: in a magic circle make, ch1, *sc, dc* x 5, slst to the first. (10) Turn

Round 2: ch1, [sc, dc] in each, slst to the first. (20) Turn

Round 3: ch1, (*sc, dc* x 1, *[sc, dc] in the next* x 2) x 4, *sc, dc* x 2, slst to the first. (28) Turn

Round 4: ch1, *sc 1, dc 1* x 14, slst to the first. (28) Turn

Repeat round 4 until the hat measures 3.5” tall. Continue to the edging on page 9.


NEWBORN

Using a 8 mm hook

Round 1: in a magic circle make, ch1, *sc, dc* x 5, slst to the first. (10) Turn

Round 2: ch1. [sc, dc] in each, slst to the first. (20) Turn

Round 3: ch1, (*sc, dc* x 1, *[sc, dc] in the next* x 2) x 5, slst to the first. (30) Turn

Round 5: ch1, (*sc, dc* x 3, *[sc, dc] in the next* x 2) x 5, slst to the first. (50) Turn

Round 6: ch1, (*sc, dc* x 7, *[sc, dc] in the next* x 2) x 3, sc 1, dc 1, slst to the first. (56) Turn

Round 7: ch1, *sc 1, dc 1* x 28, slst to the first. (56) Turn

Repeat round 7 until the hat measures 7.5” tall. Continue to the edging on page 9.


RIBBED EDGING

Change to a 7.5mm hook

Ch5 for preemie - 12 months = 1” brim / ch7 for 1 year to large adult = 1.5” brim

Row 1: sc in 2nd chain from the hook, sc 3 / 5, slst 2 stitches of the bottom edge. (2 slsts in total for joining) (4 / 6) Turn 

Row 2: (in blo) sc all. (4 / 6) Turn clockwise

Row 3: (in blo) ch1, sc all, slst 2 stitches of the bottom edge. (2 slsts in total for joining) (4 / 6) Turn anticlockwise

Repeat Rows 2-3 until you get to the other side and sew the seam.
