Toby & Tilly Tortoise

This cute little tortoise is crochet in one piece, it is a no sew design but does require a few stitches at the top of the neck to the shell, to keep the head in place.

Materials

Shell: Weight 5 chunky chenille yarn (50 meters) (I used Aldi baby yarn 95 meters per 100g ball)

Head and Legs: I used two strands of Bernat Baby Velvet

6mm hook I use this set from Amazon*

15mm Safety eyes or Crochet eyes using 2mm hook and embroidery thread

Polyester toy filling

Needle

Written in English US terms with abbreviations for UK

sc = single crochet (double crochet in UK)

ch = chain

mc = magic circle

dec = decrease sc (sc 2 stitches together) (double crochet 2 stitches together UK)

inc = increase (2 sc in next stitch) (2 dc in next stitch UK)

blo = back loop only (crochet into the back loop of the stitch)

flo = front loop only (crochet into the front loop of the stitch)

All parts are made going around in a spiral.

The Turtle will measure 4” tall and 6” long. However the size will depend on yarn and hook size used.

Legs

Make four

Leave unstuffed.

Round  1: 6 sc in mc. (6)

Round 2-4: sc all. (6)

Fasten off.

Head

Round 1: 8 sc in mc. (8)

Round 2: *inc* x 8. (16)

Round 3-6: sc all. (16) safety eyes between 3 & 4 (6 stitches apart) or sew crochet eyes later

Add stuffing

Round 7: *dec* x 8. (8)

Round 8-12: sc all. (8)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Body

Round 1: 8 sc in magic circle. (8)

Round 2: *inc* x 8. (16)

Round 3: *sc 1, inc* x 8. (24)

Round 4: *sc 2, inc* x 8. (32)

Round 5-8: sc all. (32)

Joining legs and head

Fold legs in half and sc through the leg and body

Round 9: (all in blo) sc 2, sc 3 through leg and body, sc 3, sc 3 through leg and body, sc 3, sc 4 through head and body, sc 3, sc 3 through leg and body, sc 3, sc 3 through leg and body, sc 2. (32)

Start stuffing

Round 10: *sc 1, dec* x 10, sc 2. (22)

Round 11: *sc 1, dec* x 6, sc 4. (16)

Round 12: *dec* x 8. (8)

Fasten off and weave yarn through remaining stitches and pull closed.

Shell edge

Join yarn to the first front loop from round 9, at side of head, ch1, sc in the same, sc around to other side of head.

Fasten off and sew in the ends.

Flower

I made the flower with embroidery thread and a 2mm crochet hook

Round 1: 6 sc in a mc, slst to first. (6) Fasten off

Round 2: [(ch3, dc, ch3), slst in the same stitch, slst into the next stitch], repeat 5 more times and fasten off.
