Vienna Top Crochet Pattern

This top is made from the top down using v stitches and can be made cropped, longer, or it can even be continued to dress length, depending on your style.

Materials

dk / weight 3 yarn. I used Debbie Bliss Cotton DK shades White, Avocado and Putty (84 metres per 50g)

4 and 4.5mm crochet hooks

Written in English US terms with abbreviations for UK

sc = single crochet (double crochet in UK)

dc = double crochet (treble crochet UK)

V stitch = [dc, ch1, dc] in the same space (treble crochet, ch1, treble crochet in the same space UK)

ch = chain

blo = crochet in the back loops

slst = slip stitch

Gauge

With 4.5mm hook

Chain 15

Row 1: v stitch in the third chain from hook, *skip 1, v stitch* x 6. (7 v stitches) Turn

Row 2: v stitch in each ch1 space. (7 v stitches) Turn

Repeat row 2 until 8 rows have been worked

7 v stitches x 8 rows = 4” x 4”

Pattern notes and photos

The top is worked by making the back, then the front, slst the chain from the front to the back, then working in joined rounds.

  • Each size is written separately, the progress photos and straps are at the end.

  • The ch1 does not count as a stitch.

  • After making a few of the joined rounds, make the armholes, then you will be able to try on and check the fit and decide how long you would like it.

  • My sample was made in size 6-12 months, I did the first 3 rows in Avocado, then repeated *1 row white, 2 rows putty, 1 row white, 2 rows Avocado*. To change colour, fasten off and join new colour in the first stitch.

  • It can be made in one colour or as many as you like.

  • There are two strap options, the sc ribbed one like I did or fpdc, bpdc.

If you want to decrease the v stitch, this video shows how, make the decrease at the side of the top.

The size guide for lengths is just a guide, as we are all different it’s always best to measure the individual you are making for to get the perfect fit.
